UK house building crashes to a 12-year low:  full story

Housebuilding in the UK has fallen to its lowest level since 2014, with only 37,350 new homes completed in the 3 months to September 2025, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Key causes are said to include high interest rates, elevated costs for materials and labour, planning delays and uncertainty over the future, especially regarding the Iran War.

Britain’s largest housebuilder, Barratt Redrow, is planning to drastically cut back on buying new land. Major house builder Berkeley Homes has stopped purchasing new land altogether and implemented a hiring freeze.  And it is reducing work in progress to align with sales rates.

This puts even more pressure on the Government’s plan to build 1.5 million new homes over the current 5-year parliament.
