HMRC MTD Making Tax Digital is off to a slow start: What landlords must do

The HMRC flagship project “Making Tax Digital for Income Tax” went live on April 6th 2026 but is off to a slow start so far.

A survey by Xero has found that 40% of small businesses in the first affected tranche are simply not ready and nearly 33% are unsure if they will make the first compulsory reporting date of August 7th 2026.

The survey covered landlords and businesses with turnover over £50,000 per annum in year 2024/25 who are the first cohort to be mandated into the scheme.  This cohort is estimated to total around 864,000  businesses.

What must landlords do?  Kate Hayward, UK MD of Xero, says: “For anyone feeling left behind, start by taking small manageable steps. For example, get set up with the digital tools you will need. [You will need to instal HMRC approved software, good bye to shoe box accounting systems.]  And speak with an accountant or book keeper for guidance without delay.”

Jm April 20th 2026.
